The Concord De La Salle Spartans took care of business Saturday night, rolling to a convincing 35-10 victory over the Servite Friars.

The Spartans seized control of the game from the outset, nearly taking the opening handoff to the house. Senior bulldozing back John Velasco capped off the drive with a short touchdown run to give De La Salle a 7-0 lead.

Servite muffed the ensuing kickoff, setting De La Salle up with great field position. The Spartans cashed in on the miscue, extending the lead to 14-0 on Velasco's second score of the evening.

For the second consecutive week, the Mater Dei Monarchs came out swinging and seized control of the game from the outset en route to a dominating 56-7 victory over the St. Paul Swordsmen Thursday night at the Santa Ana Bowl.

Mater Dei senior quarterback Chase Forrest had another outstanding performance and moved the Monarchs offense down the field consistently. After a short touchdown run by Malik McMorris gave Mater Dei a 7-0 lead, Forrest linked up with junior two-way athlete Ben Humphreys on a 51-yard touchdown strike. A touchdown run from senior Justin Allen extended the lead to 21-0.

The Southern California 7 on 7 circuit has always given way for talent to show off their skills in a competitive setting. This has truly been the case for Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei athlete Matt Rockett. The wide receiver / defensive back has been playing solidly for his high school 7v7 team as well as Team AIGA and we were able to catch up with him to talk a bit about his recruitment, what the 7v7 experience has done for him and more.

"It was fun. Every year's a new challenge," Stanley Johnson told CLA Sports yesterday.

Winning state championships should be fun and the Mater Dei Monarchs are beginning to build a monopoly on post-season celebrations in Sacramento. Stanley Johnson led the Monarchs to their 10th CIF State Championship under Head Coach Gary McKnight last week.

Believe it or not, Mater Dei wasn't projected to be a championship-caliber team this season.
